Moorhouse Art @ The Mill
Welcome To The Mill Studio
We are now well established with the new format short courses, and I am happy to invite you to look at the 2025 time table. As a reminder, instead of the three terms of weekly sessions per year, we are now running a programme of 3 day short courses.
Each of these courses will be open to both the Art of Drawing and the Oil Painting groups, and each Short Course will have a theme. Each themed 3 Day Course will, as always, focus on personal one-to-one tuition, as well as group learning. There are opportunities for you to join these courses even if you would prefer to work on your own projects. I hope these changes deliver the best of both worlds for everyone.
Both the Oil Painting and the Art of Drawing courses are long standing favourites, well known to many, and now there will be opportunity for these two groups to meet and work together.
So to give you a taster of the themes we have chosen for the new 2025 workshops here are the titles of a few which we will be running:
• Drawing and painting the South Downs landscape.
• The Portrait, Still Life with a difference.
• The Urban/Built Landscape, Winter Trees.
See the details for each course further on.
The Mill Studio is very much open and looking forward to either welcoming you as a new student or to saying “hi, great to see you again!”
The Courses
The new short courses, each running for three days, will cover a theme and will also offer the opportunity to work on your own projects within the group setting. During the studio sessions there will as always be group discussions and appraisals of the work going on.
Each day will run from 10am to 4pm with breaks for coffee, tea and lunch. Teas, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Please bring your own lunch.
Drawing & Painting Winter Trees In The Landscape
On this first course of 2025 we will be exploring the highlights and shadow shapes of the winter landscape. Think large scale. Think charcoal or one colour + black and white in oils. Without the camouflage of Summer we can clearly see the patterns and shapes of bare branches all round the Mill Studio or, if you wish, from drawings made before the course begins.

Drawing & Painting Everyday Objects
On this 3 day course we will be looking at everyday objects that we all use, but looking at them differently; in bright colours; in their absolute simplicity of shape and in odd groupings. Think of Michael Craig Martin’s work and use his clarity and humour as inspiration in your own unique way. Objects will be set up around the Mill Studio for you to work on or if you prefer, bring in your own favourite objects from around your home.

Drawing & Painting The Landscape Towards Abstract
We will begin this 3 day course up at Burpham Village Green (close to a very good pub called the George!) where we will immerse ourselves in the stunning South Downs landscape. For the following two days we will move back home to The Mill Studio where we will work on the drawings and paintings made on the first day of Plein Air work and develop them into more abstract final pieces. Burpham village hall will be at our disposal for the first day to ensure the flow of teas and coffees and where, if the weather is too bad to work outdoors, the Downs can be observed through the windows. Hopefully we will not have that scenario though!
Tuesday 8 July

Drawing & Painting TheBuilt Landscape
We will begin this 3 day course on site in St Nicholas Church, London Road, Arundel which is a fine example of perpendicular gothic architecture. Big words for a big building, but don’t be put off! Inside and outside of any large ornate building we can all find areas, corners or views which appeal to us. On this first day we will make drawings in black and white or colour (no paint permitted inside the church however for obvious reasons) which we will then take back to The Mill Studio to develop into final pieces. The drawings don’t have to be large scale; you may wish to focus all your attention on small details. There is something for everyone here and Arundel is awash with cafes and takeaways for supplies of the necessary drinks and snacks.

Drawing & Painting The Still Life – With a Difference
While the artist Morandi was fascinated by groupings of related shapes, his eye focused keenly on the spaces in-between the objects. With Still Life arrangements of pots and vases set up at The Mill Studio during this 3 day course we will observe the spaces in-between the objects, which are referred to as the “Negative Shapes””. Seeing these shapes clearly is as important as observing the shapes themselves and ensures that everything is in its right place and is the right size within the still life set-up.
